Steaming is an ideal cooking method for almost any vegetable. Not only does steaming help to retain most of the vegetable’s nutrients, but it also helps to preserve its shape and vibrant color.

Finishing Steamed Vegetables

After steaming, shake the excess moisture off the vegetables. Place them in a bowl, add a bit of oil or butter and season. Season with salt, Bragg, fresh herbs, or anything else you'd like, and toss.

In this lesson, we will show you how to prepare, steam and test vegetables for doneness. You will also learn how to finish and season vegetables in ways that will complement their natural flavors. You will also learn how to store steamed vegetables, so you can quickly and easily incorporate them into other dishes throughout the week.

At the end of this cooking school lesson, you will be able to:

  • Describe how to prepare vegetables for steaming

  • Explain how to steam vegetables

  • Describe tests for doneness

  • List different ways to finish steamed vegetables
