The Artist's Republic of Fremont (ARF) invites everyone to visit the first Burning Man theme camp to declare its independence and become a separate country. If you bring your passport we'll stamp it with an entry visa. Or become a citizen and be issued with your own ARF passport. We hope other theme camps will make their own entry visa stamps for filling the pages of our ARF passports. We are also hosting informal lantern-making workshops for anyone who wants to make a lantern for carrying on Saturday and Sunday nights. We'll supply what materials we can, but you can help us out by bringing your own. The kinds of materials typically used in building a paper lantern are: - colored tissue paper - heavy watercolor or construction paper - sticks or bamboo (at least 12, each 2' to 3' in length) - duct tape - picture hanging wire (length depends on the lantern, 2'-3' should do) - white glue (some types of lantern require quite a lot) - paints, glitter, and/or other decorating materials - wire mesh (1/4" mesh is good, 1' by 1' is more than enough) - votive candles or tea lights (i.e. short fat candles) - xacto knive - scissors - very soft, wide paint brush (preferably a sumi brush) A tin can lantern requires: - A large tin can - stiff wire for a handle (about 2') - votive candles or tea lights (i.e. short fat candles) - tools for punching holes in the can - pliers -- Roger Neate, July 30, 1997 at 4:23p

COCONUT MONKEY CAMP: That's right, a small place, fit for those suvenier monkeys carved out of whole coconuts. I happen to have almost a dozen of the damn things, so I plan to set up camp for them, put bombs in them, and blow them up at the end, before I burn their camp. Any one else got cocnut monkeys cluttering up thier place? -- Seth, July 27, 1997 at 3:45a
Looking for a village - 8 or 9 of us. In keeping with this year's theme of fertility, we will be bringing to Hualapai an EGGCHAIR serving as the centerpiece of our camp. Come nestle in our womb-like throne, permeable by way of built-in speakers. Float like a yoke while your hosts hatch up eclectic music & sounds from around the globe. Join us for a game of PENIS TOSS (description is futile) or come see our 5 foot BURNING SKULL. Free Burning Man STICKERS for all who come to visit! In the OlyWa area and looking for co-conspirators to wreak havock with... I have a big yard, and a shop to build stuff in, as well as a few junker cars to modify, but a shortage of devious minds to fully exploit the possibilities... Technology geeks and mechanically oriented persons are especially welcome... I also have a large bus going to the desert with room for riders & stuff... -- F. Bar, June 19, 1997 at 1:40p
Feeling parched? Why don’t you come cool off under the misting waterfalls, away from the merciless sun, removed from the invasive playa dust. Some say such a lush paradise can't exist in the middle of the desert. What brave souls will be able to hack through the jungle to find us this year? Bring your own machete because there will not be road maps to the Fern Grotto's green oasis. If you find us at BM'97, come sit a spell and regale us with your adventures as you travel down into the refreshing waters. http://home.earthlink.net/~ferngrotto/ -- deeter, June 19, 1997 at 8:16p
BEAN KING/FERN PEOPLE: Thanks for all the beans last year! That was all I had to eat except from some shrooms the whole weekend. Maybe that's why I almost croaded. The Fern Grotto was my favorite theme camp.........Wow! -- Marvin M. Devine III, June 20, 1997 at 7:29a
We're looking into a Lewis carroll-style camp, perhaps a segue into the Blue Light district's mushrooms. This would include a very large chessboard with original pieces, perhaps some characters from Through the Looking Glass and Wonderland (Jabberwocky would be good), and a solid tie to the mystery rites we're all to be celebrating. Would like ideas for contributions and sources for materials, esp for the giant chess set (I was thinking about 2' to 3' squares, arranged in an 8 by 8 pattern.) Also, where can one buy or rent a cheap generator? -- Steve, June 20, 1997 at 5:24p
Since there is never enough shade on the playa creating another group shade opportunity seems alluring. Sooo I was thinking, in keeping with the goddess, hostess, barbie themes of this yrs burning man that a playhouse camp (toys, games and other creative play-not sex) would be fun, shadeful and relaxing. Im thinking of a shady relaxed environment for people to play quietly on their own or with others. Games like cards, scrabble, dominoes etc., dolls, barbie of course, dress up, invent new board games, anything toy, play or game like. Maybe make a structure of toys to burn? House of Cards? "Paper" dolls. day games, evening games, midnight games. I'm also thinking about midnight miniature croquet--standard mallets, large hoops made of various materials, possibly small arches, very decorative able to hold candles/torches, balls of various sizes and materials and shapes anything that can be propelled through hoops by a mallet and can burn. Rules could change every night. Sunset Cocktail croquet, and midnight miniature FLAMING croquet. Just a bunch of ideas right now. Looking for others who would like to join in, develop it more, shop for and find stuff, set up etc. -- judy (aka plump kitten barbie), June 23, 1997 at 10:51p

I am considering building a large dwelling built of aluminium tube. It can be Pyramidal or hexapodal or something. Very strong. Does anyone want me in thier theme camp? Any sugestions on size or shape? It can be 30' tall and 3 floors, or it can be minimal. Maybe a trampoline 2nd floor. -- Joe, June 30, 1997 at 7:31a

I'm looking for a camp. I have climbing gear, bondagey gear, technical and mechanical know-how, and a really twisted.. pair of earrings (that i've only found 111 uses for as of yet). Personally, I'd love to find someone who wanted to do something along the lines of still life motionless but breathing (panting) Michael Manning. Take all day to set up only two or three scenes... But since I'm not thin lithe and hermaphroditic I'm not real confident. Well, that and the fact that the liquid latex budget would be outrageous (HEH! :) Anyone who wants a warm body to do twisted things mail me. -a dancing marsupial -- Dooooooon, June 30, 1997 at 4:57p

myself and two friends have never made it to the previous burning mans but are determined to make it this year. we were thinking of being a small roaming tribe sporting a wife beater theme (it realy is not as bad as it sounds and tends to be more of a self debasement) anyhow, none f us has a vehicle that could transport us there and regretably back, so i was wondering if anyone with a van/bus/train car will be making the journey from the east coast (syracuse ny) if not, then we will be the three pungent fellows on the train. -- joshua briscoe, July 1, 1997 at 3:25p

A few of us are planning to attend the festivities this year.... and not being completely informed on all the ins and outs... I was just curious, can you make the decision fo which camp/village you may wish to join... AFTER you get there???? Any enlightening tips as the this related topic and any other would be greatly appreciated...Thanks -- Jen, July 3, 1997 at 10:54a
Jen and others whom it may concern: participation is more a factor of helping and being helped by others at Black Rock City. The only "rules" regarding participation in a camp are those laid out and discussed by the camp founders themselves. Most would be happy to have you help them construct their projects, provided the vision and drive are there. I, for one, am planning an Aliceum Camp with about 8 to 10 others and would gladly welcome contributions. But theme camps take a great deal of planning and sweat to build, and most people (including me) would not appreciate people taking advantage of their hard work without substantial prior contribution. It's a participatory thing, not a spectator event. The best way to decide upon joining a theme camp is to talk to those involved in its creation: what are their goals, visions, and what work is needed. Subscribe to the various mail lists. Get involved! -- Steven, July 3, 1997 at 4:47p

Oasis Camp. Amidst the burning, calm. Between the dust and the heat, refuge. Chill with us awhile as exotic birds sing from the treetops and a tropical mist settles on our parched bodies. The sun sets quickly in the tropics. The tribe roasts an animal and brings out the drums. The natives are restless tonight! Wild dancing, bizarre installations, savage rituals, miraculous experiments ... This will be my third Burning Man Festival. This year, I want to actively participate in creating the anarchic order that is the essence of Burning Man. My idea is to do an "antique video games" theme camp. I have several systems (including a Fairchild cartridge system (circa 1978), a Super Pong, and two Amiga 1000s. I can contribute money and web space, as well. Would need generators, couches, and tarps, plus additional systems (ColecoVision, MicroVision, handhelds, TI 99/4A, etc.). I think it would be a gas to play DigDug or Pong or Alpine Climber, sitting in the middle of the desert at 3 a.m., totally wired on adrenalin and excitement. Everyone I've mentioned this to thinks it is really cool... help me make it a reality. Call Thomas at 408/457-9671x101 (work) or send me email. -- Thomas Leavitt, July 13, 1997 at 1:38p
ExBones Band Members! Dancers and Musicians of the Danse Macabre! Let us dance at Burning Man, maybe each eve around twilight? Sadie drummed at Northern for seven years; Grover plays fiddle and flute. We also did Castro Street and the Pumpkin Festival, Gay Day and St. Stupid, other ceremonial venues.... Want to join us? You need: a skeleton suit, black and white, that pretty much covers you; a mask or other head covering; an instrument, be it only zills or bones: any other costume accessories that be dead..... Contact us with any questions. The ten to fifteen songs we usually do are familiar and similar, and we will bring music along. We are Sadie and Grover of the Four-Sided Theme Camp.... -- sadie damascus, July 13, 1997 at 7:51p

Are there writers (fiction, though I suppose Poets and non-fiction authors might be interested too) in having, if not a camp or a village, then at least a collective space to write, give readings, read samples of others' work and comment, etc.? I love visual arts and music, but let's not leave us writers out :-) -- Jon, July 16, 1997 at 1:24p
I have finally decided on a project, but I lack funds, and I need collaborators... I am building a 20 foot platform on a stick type thing modeled after the space needle in Seattle, but Iwould like to have a flame out the top at night, not unlike the space needle souvenir lighters sold in Seattle gift shops... The problem is I lack time and money to mess around with propane... If some pyro wanted to take this on, I think we could put up a pretty neat looking installation... If anyone has any ideas about this, or would like to help out, please e-mail me... -- Otto Matic, July 16, 1997 at 4:34p
I haven't been to the Burning Man before but I did carry the Banana Queen past the teevee camersas at the first be-in in Central Park. My eleven year old son Max & I will be coming to the Burning Man this year and would like to get together with some other folks with kids. Our last dessert adventure was to a hot springs off in Death Valley. I have kitchen equipment and musical instruments to share as well as sense of humor and a love of adventure. Let's get together in the dessert :-):-) -- Robert & Max, July 17, 1997 at 6:23p
I understand nudity is accepted at a couple of locations and/or specific events, has anyone ever had a totally nude camp? For the sake of being politically correct, I was thinking of a camp along the lines of Family Social Nudism, perhaps as practiced by the AANR (American Association for Nude Recreation) or TNS (The Naturist Society). These are non-sexual events, and thus the activities are suitable for the entire family, including kids, although I'm not sure how many kids will be around burning man. Personally, I would tend to lean towards AANR's guideline of 'Nude when possible, clothed when practical (cold, rain, buggy, sunburn, etc.),' rather than TNS's guideline of 'Clothing Optional' which seemingly allows people to remain dressed too long, or never get nude at all. If someone else has such a camp, I'll certainly consider joining yours. If someone has a camp of another theme, but would be willing to share it with some nudists, I might go along with that also. If nude camps might not be allowed, then I could always dress minimally. Currently, I expect to arrive Friday afternoon, and depart early Monday morning. While many camps are planning great structures and other events, at this time, I have no ideas along those lines that would tie in with this theme, and the limited vehicle space I expect to have. -- Charlie Crockett, July 18, 1997 at 2:05a

Ziggy and Christine are creative, hardworking, nice and eager to participate in a theme camp. We have some ideas for projects (macro & micro) we'd like to build/incorporate into a theme camp. How 'bout an interactive Labrynth with a mysterious, special surprise for those who journey to the center (could be fun day and night). How 'bout a glow-in-the-dark camp (all things flour and phosphorescent). We also like water, interactive musical sculptures, shade and toys (fun things to play with, create & destroy). We are considering renting a giant (4 to 5 stories high-as big as the burning man!) tubular blowing man. It has a large fan under each leg, which causes it to constantly move and contort. It is white and constructed of tubular fabric, which is inflated by these large fans. We saw one in action at the Utah Arts Festival and it was way cool burning-manish!!! We think it would be very awesome to have this blowing man on the playa. Only problem is we lack the funds. We contacted the makers and found out it would rent for around $3000-$3500 dollars depending on freight and airfares. What we're thinking is to get a 100 people to chip in $30-35 each to bring blowing man to burning man. Because of the late timing we need a rapid response to pull this off. First thing we are looking for is sufficient interest before we will collect money. If we don't recieve sufficient response by August 1 we won't pursue this idea any further. If you would like to see 50' high contorting blowing man on the playa please contact us at (801)393-1455 (Peter) or (801)595-8251 (Karen). Footnote: We'll be adding a E-mail address soon. -- Peter Hines and Karen Fazekas, July 19, 1997 at 4:12p

If you have interest in providing programming (spoken word, poetry, non-traditional music) or can help us assemble a decent mixing board and mic's contact us. -- Moebius, July 20, 1997 at 1:53p

Imagine the voices, drums, and ancient instruments of Medieval music accompaning experimental dance and performance art in a lush Moorish tent at the Burning Man this year. We are considering engaging several of our friends who are professional Medieval musicians along with several talented amateur musicians to provide Medieval music concerts every night Thurs thru Sun at dusk to accompany the trippiest in movement and performance. If you are a musician or a dancer or would like to share the ambience of a Middle-Eastern influenced Medieval tent from 12-13th century Spain or France, please contact us via email or page us while we are in New York at 1-800-MCI-PAGE then dial 187-2049. Our theme camp group also contains filmmakers from Berlin, performance artists, and several experimental musicians...so, although we hope to have a hot women's choir and a men's chant and Georgian choir, we are also interested in peformers and technicians who think they could contribute to this scene in an unorthodox manner. -- Christopher & Isabell, July 21, 1997 at 8:12p
Last year we brought a rocket-powered bicycle. This year we plan to have a rocket-powered, mobile drum platform. Looking for Taiko style drummers and drums. Also, will pay entrance fee in exchange for shooting photos with my camera. -- Mike Stringer, July 21, 1997 at 11:45p

My brother and I, have considered establishing a camp. Our ideas are to either have a bad Vegas lounge act camp, with all the expected sleaze, or an interactive game show camp. We're looking to get feed back from anyone that might want to join us.Our outline is sketchy, and time is drawing near, so any ideas and interest would help. -- Monty Doehring, July 23, 1997 at 6:12p

Aliceum is under way! About ten of us have embarked upon a madly ambitious plan to re-create Wonderland in the Hualapai flats. The name: Aliceum. The theme: Victorian absurdity, debauchery, and twists and turns for all the senses. if you're up on Thursday, check us out. We'll likely be on the South Side, playa-front. -- Steve, July 25, 1997 at 0:57p
